Alfred Hospital

The Alfred hospital was founded in 1871 and is Melbourne’s oldest hospital that is operating on its original site.  The Alfred is also one of Australia’s busiest and most comprehensive hospitals catering for patients all across Victoria. This complex facility isconstantly evolving and with this comes many wayfinding challenges.

ID LAB conducted a gap analysis of the Alfred site and provided cost effective recommendations to improve user journeys. The recommendations implemented included; terminology updates, simplified signage, wall graphic treatments, establishing brighter interiors and reducing clutter.  ID LAB worked with the marketing and communications team to ensure the Alfred brand was reflected consistently throughout the facility. Acting as wayfinding cues, these brand elements assist in unifying the various architectural styles of the site. As a digital extension to the physical wayfinding system, ID LAB provided user experience consultancy and map design for the new Alfred wayfinding app. 

Due to the nature and development of the facility, ID LAB continues to engage with the Alfred in ongoing wayfinding projects.
